What Is Informal Child Care?

Informal child care is when you, as a relative, friend, or neighbor, care for a child you know. This can happen in your home or the child’s home. Since you’re someone the family trusts, you don’t need a formal child care license.

How to Get Started

  1. Apply Through the Child Care Provider Portal
  • Visit the online Child Care Provider Portal.
  • Click “Register for a New Account” to sign up.
  • Download the informal child care packet.
  1. Complete Required Steps
  • Background Check: Get fingerprinted and complete a background check.
  • Trainings: Attend Health & Safety trainings and get CPR and First Aid certified.
  • Home Inspection: Prepare your home for an inspection to meet federal standards.
  1. Submit Forms
  • Fill out all necessary forms, like consent forms and proof of identity.
  • Make sure both you and the parent sign and date the forms.
  • Submit everything through the Portal for review and approval.
